Beavers Challenge Awards Explained | UK Scouts

The Beaver Challenge Awards are an important part of the Beaver programme.

They encourage young people to try new things, develop skills, work with others and explore the world around them.

There are six Challenge Awards for Beavers:

  • My Adventure Challenge Award
  • My Outdoors Challenge Award
  • Personal Challenge Award
  • My Skills Challenge Award
  • Teamwork Challenge Award
  • My World Challenge Award

Beavers can work towards the awards throughout their time in the section. Completing all six is also an important step towards the Chief Scout’s Bronze Award, the highest award a Beaver can earn.

My Adventure Challenge Award

The My Adventure Challenge Award is about getting out there and having adventures.

Beavers can explore new places, try activities they’ve never done before and experience different types of adventure.

The award encourages young people to step outside their normal routine and discover something new.

It could involve outdoor exploration, trying a new activity or taking part in an exciting challenge.

The important part is the experience of doing something different.

My Outdoors Challenge Award

The My Outdoors Challenge Award gets Beavers exploring the outdoor world.

This could include activities such as camping, nature exploration, outdoor games or learning about the environment.

It’s a great opportunity to introduce Beavers to the idea that the outdoors is somewhere to explore, learn and have fun.

Outdoor activities can also help build confidence and independence.

Personal Challenge Award

The Personal Challenge Award is about setting a challenge for yourself.

The idea is that everyone has different things they find difficult.

Something that is easy for one Beaver might be a genuine challenge for another.

The challenge should therefore be meaningful to the individual Beaver and agreed with their leader.

This could involve developing a new skill, overcoming a fear or working towards something they want to achieve.

The important thing is the personal progress, rather than comparing one Beaver with another. Scouts describes Challenge Awards generally as opportunities to step outside your comfort zone and try something new.

My Skills Challenge Award

The My Skills Challenge Award is all about developing useful skills.

Beavers work on different activities involving health, creativity, practical skills, music and problem-solving.

For example, the requirements include learning a new song, completing creative activities and learning at least three practical skills. Beavers also work with others on problem-solving missions.

This makes the award particularly flexible.

A Beaver might learn to tie their shoelaces, decorate biscuits, make a model, learn their address or develop another suitable skill agreed with their leader.

Teamwork Challenge Award

The Teamwork Challenge Award is about learning how to work well with other people.

Beavers take part in team games, complete activities together and demonstrate that they can be helpful members of a team.

They also have opportunities to take on leadership responsibilities.

The current requirements include taking part in at least four different team games, completing a team challenge, being a helpful team member, taking part in at least two Log Chews and leading an activity or captaining a team.

This is a great award for games, group challenges and collaborative activities.

My World Challenge Award

The My World Challenge Award helps Beavers discover more about their community, culture and the wider world.

The requirements include learning about the local community, taking part in an activity that helps local people and experiencing an activity connected with part of the UK.

Beavers also explore reflection or celebration, their Beaver Promise, the natural world and another country.

This makes it a particularly varied Challenge Award.

It can include community projects, cultural activities, nature activities and learning about different countries.

How the Six Awards Fit Together

The six Challenge Awards cover a wide range of experiences.

My Adventure encourages Beavers to try new adventures.

My Outdoors develops their connection with the outdoor world.

Personal Challenge encourages individual growth.

My Skills develops practical and creative abilities.

Teamwork teaches cooperation and leadership.

My World helps Beavers understand their community and the wider world.

Together, they provide a broad programme rather than focusing on one particular skill.

How Do Beavers Earn the Chief Scout’s Bronze Award?

The Challenge Awards are particularly important because they contribute towards the Chief Scout’s Bronze Award.

To earn the Bronze Award, a Beaver needs to:

Complete all six Challenge Awards

and

Complete any four Activity or Staged Activity Badges of their choice.

The Bronze Award is the highest award a Beaver can earn.

If a Beaver hasn’t quite finished everything before moving up to Cubs, Scouts says they can complete the remaining requirements during their first term as a Cub.

Do Beavers Have to Complete Them in Order?

No particular order is required.

Leaders can build the Challenge Awards into the Colony’s programme and work on different requirements as appropriate.

This means a single activity can sometimes contribute towards an award while also being fun in its own right.

For example, a team navigation game might help with Teamwork, while an outdoor activity could contribute towards My Outdoors.

Don’t Turn the Awards Into Homework

The Challenge Awards work best when they are part of normal Beaver activities.

A nature walk doesn’t need to feel like a badge requirement.

A cooking activity can simply be a fun cooking activity.

A team game can be enjoyed for what it is.

The award requirements can be quietly built into the programme rather than making every activity feel like a test.

Celebrate Progress

Completing a Challenge Award is a significant achievement for a young Beaver.

Take the opportunity to celebrate it.

You could have an awards evening, a badge presentation, a special camp celebration or simply make a big moment of presenting the badge at the end of a meeting.

The achievement isn’t just about the badge.

It’s about everything the Beaver has experienced along the way.

Final Thoughts

The six Beaver Challenge Awards provide a great framework for helping young people try new things, develop skills, work together and explore their world.

They also provide a clear route towards the Chief Scout’s Bronze Award.

The best approach is to make the awards part of an enjoyable Beaver programme rather than treating them as a checklist.
