DAY 6

Day 6 โ€” Navigation Challenge

Good navigation is about knowing where you are, where you need to go and how you can get there safely. Being able to read a map, recognise features around you and plan a route are essential outdoor skills.

In this challenge, you’ll practise using a map and your surroundings to plan a route and make sensible navigation decisions. You’ll consider landmarks, direction and route choices as you work out how to get from one point to another.

The aim isn’t simply to reach the destination. It’s to understand how good navigation helps you stay aware of your location, choose a suitable route and travel safely outdoors.

๐Ÿ“– Learn the Skill

Before setting off, identify your starting point, destination and a safe route between them.

Pay attention to:

  • Map symbols
  • Grid references
  • Landmarks
  • Paths and rights of way
  • Terrain
  • Weather conditions
  • Your available daylight

A good navigator also knows when to stop, check the map and reconsider their route rather than continuing in the wrong direction.

๐ŸŽฏ Today’s Challenge

Choose a familiar, safe area that you already know well.

Using a map, plan a short route between two points.

Write down:

  • Your starting point
  • Your destination
  • Two landmarks you expect to pass
  • The direction you need to travel
  • One alternative route
  • One thing that could cause you to change your route

Bonus challenge: Put the map away and describe the route from memory. Then check your answer against the map.

Safety note: Complete this in a familiar area and tell someone where you are going. Don’t walk while looking at your phone or map. Don’t deliberately enter unfamiliar, hazardous or restricted areas.
