DAY 4
SURVIVAL MINDSET
Day 4 โ Emergency Shelter
An emergency shelter can help protect you from wind, rain and cold when you need to stay outdoors longer than expected. Knowing how to choose a suitable location and make effective use of available materials is an important outdoor survival skill.
In this challenge, you’ll learn how shelter design, materials and location work together to provide protection from the elements. You’ll consider what makes a shelter effective and how different conditions can affect your choices.
The aim isn’t to build the biggest or most complicated shelter. It’s to understand the principles of emergency shelter and make sensible decisions without taking unnecessary risks or choosing an unsafe location.
๐ Learn the Skill
An effective emergency shelter should reduce your exposure to the weather while remaining stable and safe.
Before building one, consider:
A simple shelter that is stable and appropriate for the conditions can be more useful than a complicated design that is difficult to build.
๐ฏ Today’s Challenge
Design a simple emergency shelter that could protect one person from poor weather.
You can draw your design on paper or describe it in your own words.
Include:
Bonus challenge: Identify three things that could cause your shelter design to fail and explain how you would reduce those risks.
This can be completed as a drawing or planning exercise. Do not climb trees, cut branches or build a shelter in an unsafe or unauthorised location.
