DAY 3

Day 3 โ€” Essential Knots

Knots are one of the most useful practical skills you can learn outdoors. The right knot can help you secure equipment, attach ropes and build simple structures safely and effectively.

In this challenge, you’ll learn to recognise and tie three useful types of knot: a hitch, a bend and a loop. You’ll learn what makes each type different and consider which type of knot is best suited to different outdoor situations.

The aim isn’t to memorise dozens of knots. It’s to understand the purpose of each type, choose the right knot for the job and practise tying it correctly.

๐Ÿ“– Learn the Skill

Knots can be grouped into different families according to what they do.

Hitches attach a rope to an object, such as a post or pole.

Bends join two ropes together.

Loops create a fixed or adjustable loop in a rope.

Start by learning the difference between these three types. Then practise tying one example of each.

Remember: a knot is only useful if you can tie it correctly and know how to check that it is secure.

๐ŸŽฏ Today’s Challenge

Find a suitable length of rope or cord and practise three knots:

1. One hitch
Tie a hitch and identify what it could be used for.

2. One bend
Tie a bend that can be used to join two ropes.

3. One loop
Tie a loop and explain what makes it useful.

For each knot, check that:

  • You know its name.
  • You know what type of knot it is.
  • You know what it is used for.
  • You can tie it correctly.
  • You can untie it after use.

Bonus challenge: Ask someone else to name the type of knot you’ve tied without telling them first.
