DAY 1

Day 1 โ€” Survival Mindset

Survival starts with your mindset. When something goes wrong outdoors, staying calm, thinking clearly and making sensible decisions can be just as important as the equipment you carry.

In this survival challenge, you’ll learn how to assess an unexpected situation, identify your immediate priorities and make sensible decisions under pressure. These are essential survival skills that can help you respond more effectively when things don’t go according to plan.

Take on today’s challenge, work through the activity and put your survival decision-making skills to the test.

๐Ÿ“– Learn the Skill

A useful survival mindset means stopping, assessing the situation and dealing with the most important problems first.

Think about:

  • Staying calm
  • Checking for immediate danger
  • Protecting yourself from the weather
  • Assessing the resources you have
  • Deciding whether you need help
  • Making a simple plan rather than rushing

Learn more about the psychology behind survival situations before completing today’s challenge.

๐ŸŽฏ Today’s Challenge

Imagine you are on a walk when you realise that you are no longer sure where you are.

You have your basic equipment with you, but daylight is beginning to fade.

Write down the first three things you would do.

For each one, explain why you would do it.

Think about:

  • Your immediate safety
  • Staying calm
  • The weather and your surroundings
  • Your available resources
  • Getting help if necessary

Bonus challenge: Explain what you think could happen if you made decisions too quickly without first assessing the situation.

Safety note: This is a planning exercise. Do not deliberately put yourself into a dangerous situation to test your survival skills.
