THE FINAL TEST
Everything you’ve learned comes down to this.
Your Final Fire Challenge
You have completed the Fire Mastery lessons and quizzes. Now it is time to put those skills into practice.
The Fire Master Challenge is your final assessment. You will need to demonstrate that you can prepare, light, manage and safely extinguish a controlled outdoor fire.
Take your time and focus on safe technique rather than speed. The aim is to demonstrate good firecraft and responsible fire management.
What You Need to Do
Prepare
Prepare your fire area safely.
Choose a suitable location, check the surrounding area for hazards and make sure you have everything you need before lighting the fire.
Build
Build a suitable fire lay.
Choose an appropriate fire lay and prepare your tinder, kindling and fuel so that the fire can be built and managed safely.
Light
Light the fire using a suitable method.
Use a method you have learned during Fire Mastery and demonstrate good control of the ignition process.
Manage
Keep the fire controlled.
Maintain the fire by managing its size, fuel and airflow. Keep the surrounding area safe throughout.
Extinguish
Put the fire out completely.
Extinguish the fire safely and check the area carefully before leaving it.
Safety First
Only complete this challenge where fires are permitted and where you have appropriate supervision and permission.
Follow local fire restrictions and site rules. Keep water or another suitable means of extinguishing the fire immediately available.
Never leave the fire unattended.
Do not attempt the challenge in dangerous weather or conditions, including strong winds or exceptionally dry conditions.
If the fire becomes difficult to control, stop the challenge and extinguish it safely.
Your safety and the safety of other people always comes before completing the challenge.
Share Your Achievement
Once you have completed the challenge safely, you can share your achievement with the Survival Guides UK community.
Upload a couple of suitable photos to the Social Activity feed and include:
#FireMaster
You can also add:
#OutdoorSkillsMastery
Your photo should show your completed fire setup or another safe part of your challenge. Never take risks just to get a photograph.
Do not photograph yourself holding flames, standing close to an uncontrolled fire or doing anything unsafe.
A photo is simply evidence that you completed the challenge safely. It is not a requirement to put yourself at risk.
Completing Fire Mastery
Once you have completed the challenge and shared your proof, your Fire Master Challenge can be checked.
After your challenge has been approved, you will earn the Fire Master achievement and complete the Fire Mastery pathway.
You have gone from learning the foundations of fire safety to demonstrating practical firecraft skills. This is the final step in your Fire Mastery journey.
