THE FINAL TEST

Your Final Camping Challenge

Plan, Establish and Manage a Complete Camp

Your challenge is to plan and establish a campsite and demonstrate how you would manage it throughout an outdoor stay.

You should be able to show that you can make sensible decisions, adapt when conditions change and leave the site properly when finished.

You do not need to create an unnecessarily complicated camp. The aim is to demonstrate good judgement and practical camping skills.

What You Need to Do

1

Choose and Assess Your Campsite

Demonstrate that you can assess a potential campsite before setting up.

Consider:
Ground conditions
Drainage
Wind direction and exposure
Nearby water
Potential hazards
Access and escape routes
Weather conditions
Environmental impact
Whether the location is suitable for the activity

Explain why you selected your final campsite and identify any areas you decided not to use.

2

Establish Your Shelter

Set up your tent, tarp or other appropriate shelter.

Demonstrate that you have considered:
Ground conditions
Wind
Water run-off
Space
Stability
Access
Ventilation
Protection from the weather

Your shelter should be positioned as part of the campsite rather than simply placed wherever there is space.

3

Organise Your Campsite

Create a practical campsite where equipment can be found easily and activities can be carried out safely.

Consider:
Sleeping area
Cooking area
Equipment storage
Food storage
Movement around camp
Waste
Water
Fire or stove arrangements where appropriate
Keeping wet and dry equipment separate

The campsite should be organised so that it remains practical throughout the stay.

4

Demonstrate Warmth and Sleeping Skills

Show how you would stay warm and comfortable overnight.

Demonstrate your understanding of:
Sleeping bag use
Ground insulation
Clothing layers
Keeping sleeping equipment dry
Ventilation
Managing moisture and condensation
Protecting yourself from wind and rain

Explain how you would adapt if conditions became colder or wetter than expected.

5

Manage Food and Water

Demonstrate how you would manage food and water safely at camp.

Consider:
Food storage
Keeping food protected
Camp kitchen organisation
Hygiene
Washing equipment
Waste
Water collection and use
Preventing food from becoming contaminated

6

Demonstrate Outdoor Living Skills

Show that you can manage the everyday practical side of living outdoors.

This includes:
Clothing
Personal hygiene
Equipment care
Keeping essential items dry
Washing clothes when necessary
Maintaining an organised campsite
Managing waste
Keeping the campsite clean

7

Deal With a Problem

Your assessment must include at least one realistic camping problem.

For example:
Heavy rain
Strong winds
Wet clothing
Wet sleeping equipment
A leaking tent
Damaged shelter
Unexpected cold
A change in the weather
Having to move the campsite

Explain what happened, what you decided to do and why.

The important part is demonstrating that you can adapt your plan rather than simply continuing with an unsafe arrangement.

8

Break Camp Properly

At the end of the assessment, dismantle the campsite responsibly.

Demonstrate that you can:
Pack equipment correctly
Check that nothing has been left behind
Deal with waste
Leave the ground as responsibly as possible
Check the surrounding area
Remove temporary structures
Make sure the site is safe when you leave

Evidence to Submit

Your assessment should include enough evidence for the skills to be reviewed.

Suggested evidence includes:

  • Campsite plan
  • Photograph of the selected campsite
  • Photograph of your shelter
  • Photograph of the organised campsite
  • Photograph showing your sleeping/warmth setup
  • Photograph of your food or kitchen arrangement
  • Evidence of outdoor living arrangements
  • Evidence of the problem you dealt with
  • Evidence of your completed camp breakdown
  • A short written reflection

Your evidence does not need to show anything unsafe or put you at risk simply to obtain a photograph.

Your Reflection

After completing the assessment, explain:

What went well?

What would you change next time?

What problem did you encounter and how did you deal with it?

What camping skill do you now feel most confident using?

What skill would you like to practise further?

Being able to identify improvements is part of becoming a better outdoor skills practitioner.

Assessment Review

Your assessment will be reviewed against the following areas:

  • Campsite selection
  • Hazard awareness
  • Shelter setup
  • Campsite organisation
  • Warmth and sleeping arrangements
  • Food and equipment management
  • Outdoor living skills
  • Adaptation to changing conditions
  • Problem solving
  • Hygiene and waste management
  • Environmental responsibility
  • Camp breakdown
  • Quality of decisions and explanations

The aim is not to produce a perfect campsite.

The aim is to demonstrate that you can make sensible decisions and use the skills you have learned throughout Camping Mastery.
